If Germany Holds Firm On EU Deal, Greece Can Look To USA, Russia, China – 10 February 2015

Greece warns that if informal EU leader Germany remains rigid on granting Athens a new deal, it will seek assistance elsewhere. The US, Russia and China are the possible candidates.

The warning came from new Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos, who assumed office after the populist Syriza party won general election in January and its leader Alexis Tsipras took the prime ministership from Antonis Samaras.

“What we want is a deal. But if there is no deal – hopefully (there will be) – and if we see that Germany remains rigid and wants to blow apart Europe, then we have the obligation to go to Plan B. Plan B is to get funding from another source,” he told Greek television on an overnight show running into early Tuesday, as reported by Reuters.

China, Switzerland Sign Deal On Yuan Trading In Zurich – 22 January 2015

The central banks of China and Switzerland have signed a pact to establish a yuan trading center in Zurich. The deal is expected to increase the number of European transactions in yuan.

Switzerland’s central bank said on Wednesday it had signed the agreement with the People’s Bank of China. The deal was concluded during the visit of Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang to the World Economic Forum in Davos.

According to the agreement, Switzerland will receive a quota of about $8 billion (50 billion Yuan).

“It [the arrangement] will promote the use of the renminbi by enterprises and financial institutions in cross-border transactions, and promote facilitation of bilateral trade and investment,” the Swiss National Bank said in a statement.

China, Russia Reported To Build Huge Seaport In North Asia – 11 September 2014

China and Russia are to build one of the largest ports in northeast Asia on Russia’s Sea of Japan coast, Chinese media reports. It is the latest step by Beijing and Moscow to bring their economies closer, and diversify from Western influence.

The new seaport will be located in Russia’s Far East, just 18 kilometers away from the Chinese border and will be capable to handle up to 60 million tons of cargo a year, China’s state-run People’s Daily Online reported.

The deal between the two countries was signed at May’s Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in Shanghai, the report said.

China, Russia Military Ties Deepen With Naval Drill In East China Sea – 3 May 2014

On Wednesday, China announced that it plans to hold joint naval drills with Russia in the East China Sea later this month.

“These drills are regular exercises held by China and Russia’s navies, and the purpose is to deepen practical cooperation between the two militaries, to raise the ability to jointly deal with maritime security threats,” China’s Defense Ministry said in a statement published on its website.
