Hundreds of British troops to be questioned over ‘weak’ war crime allegations Up to 1,000 British troops are expected to be investigated for crimes allegedly committed during the Iraq war, it can be revealed.

Investigators with the Iraq Historic Allegations Team (IHAT) have already identified more than 100 serving and former members of the armed forces who they want to interview about the alleged torture of Iraqi civilians. Continue reading

The Telegraph – James Quinn – Lord Rothschild Takes 130 Million Pounds Bet Against The Euro – 19 August 2012

Lord Rothschild has taken a near-£130m bet against the euro as fears continue to grow that the single currency will break up.

The member of the banking dynasty has taken the position through RIT Capital Partners, the £1.9bn investment trust of which he is executive chairman.

The fact that the former investment banker, a senior member of the Rothschild family, has taken such a view will be seen as a further negative for the currency. Continue reading

Debt Crisis: Moody’s Downgrades 13 Italian Banks – 17 July 2012

Moody’s cut its rating for 13 Italian banks this evening, citing the weakened borrower standing of the Italian government after its credit grade was downgraded last week.

The ratings fell by one to two notches, with Unicredit and Intesa Sanpaolo both falling to Baa2 from A3.

“Today’s actions follow the weakening of the Italian government’s credit profile,” Moody’s said in a statement.

The Telegraph – Nick Pisain – Prosecutors Investigate Vatican Bank Mafia Link –

Anti Mafia prosecutors have asked the secretive Vatican Bank to disclose details of an account held by a priest in connection with a money laundering and fraud investigation, it emerged on Sunday.

The official request was made more than a month ago but so far the Vatican Bank, known as the Institute for Religious Works, has refused to disclose any records of the account held by father Ninni Treppiedi – who is currently suspended from serving as a priest.

Investigators want to know more about vast sums of money that are said to have passed through his account to establish if they were money laundering operations by on the run Mafia Godfather, Matteo Messina Denaro.

He took the decision after speaking to close colleagues at BSkyB and News Corporation last week and over the weekend.

Mr Murdoch decided to quit now ahead of what is likely to be a critical report by the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee at the end of the month into allegations of phone hacking.
