Bee Studies Feel Sting Of Pesticide Manufacturers – MPs – 28 July 2014

RT logoCorporate funding from pesticide manufacturers threatens to contaminate research into the impact of agricultural chemicals on the declining bee population, warn a committee of MPs.

Reacting to the government’s draft National Pollinator Strategy, the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) says further research needs to be transparent and subject to independent controls in order to stave off corporate influence and to command public confidence.

“When it comes to research on pesticides, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is content to let the manufacturers fund the work,” Chair of the Committee, Joan Walley MP, said. “This testifies to a loss of environmental protection capacity in the Department responsible for it.

“If the research is to command public confidence, independent controls need to be maintained at every step. Unlike other research funded by pesticide companies, these studies also need to be peer-reviewed and published in full,” she added.

Under the banner “all out for shale,” the UK government is opening up vast swathes of the British countryside to companies, who will extract fossil fuels from deep under the ground through the controversial process of hydraulic fracturing. Bidding opened in Britain on Monday for companies looking to exploit shale gas resources.

Companies who are granted a license will be required to apply for planning permission and environmental permits before they can begin extraction of shale gas.

Over 1,100 Killed, Nearly 3,500 Wounded In E. Ukraine Military Operation – UN – 28 July 2014

The report also states that these are the minimum casualty toll estimates by the UN monitoring mission and WHO.

The report says that the cause of the rising death toll is intensified artillery shelling of the civilian residential areas and the so-called “collateral damage” of the armed actions in the heavily-populated areas.

The downing of the Malaysian MH17 plane may amount to a “war crime,” the UN human rights chief Navi Pillay said.

Lavrov: Hopeful MH17 Crash Probe Will Respect ‘Presumption Of Innocence’ – 28 July 2014

RT logoRussia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has urged Western partners against jumping to conclusions over what caused the MH17 crash before an international investigation into the catastrophe is conducted.

Lavrov said the only way to have an impartial investigation is to have it under the aegis of the United Nations.

“Only honest, open participation of all who possesses information on the catastrophe can be considered normal,” he told journalists at a briefing in Moscow.
