​GCHQ Broke The Law, Ordered To Destroy Stolen Documents By UK Tribunal – 29 April 2015

In an historic ruling, a British intelligence tribunal has ordered UK spy agency GCHQ to destroy communications it collected unlawfully from Libyan dissident Sami al-Saadi.

Saadi’s legal representatives say it is the first time in its 15-year history that the Investigatory Powers Tribunal has upheld a complaint against the security services.

The human rights charity Reprieve add it is also the first time the tribunal has ordered a security agency to give up surveillance material.

Documents which the IPT ruled must be destroyed are legally privileged communications belonging to Saadi, a former opponent of ousted Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, who claims he was “rendered” by UK spies to Libya, where he was tortured.

Media Coalition To Challenge UK Terror Trial Secrecy – 29 April 2015

A ban on reporting a terrorism trial and the confiscation of journalists’ court notes pertaining to the proceedings are set to be challenged in an appeal court by a media coalition.

The trial, which took place at the Old Bailey in March this year, saw law student Erol Incedal cleared of preparing acts of terrorism.

The 27-year-old was then sentenced to three and a half years in prison for possession of a memory card which contained a bomb making manual.

Carried out under levels of secrecy unprecedented in the UK, the trial saw only a small number of journalists permitted to attend.

These few were forbidden to report anything they saw or heard. At the end of each day of the trial their notes were confiscated and locked in a safe until proceedings reopened.

Orders to do so came from Washington. A previous article said Obama wants Yemenis starved to death or dying from unavailable medical treatment for serious terror-bombing inflicted wounds.

A Saudi spokesman called Sanaa’s runway inoperable. Brig. General Ahmed Asseri said Tehran’s cargo plane didn’t coordinate with Riyadh and ignored warnings to turn back.

Supreme Court Orders UK To Take ‘Immediate Action’ Over Illegal Air Pollution – 29 April 2015

Britain’s highest court has ordered the government to take immediate action over illegally high levels of air pollution in the UK.

The legal case relates to nitrogen dioxide levels in the air, which breach EU limits.

Britain’s Supreme Court ruled unanimously the government must submit new air quality plans to the European Commission no later than December 31, 2015.

Air pollution is estimated to cause 29,000 early deaths a year in the UK, more than obesity and alcohol combined.

Scientists speculate this could even be an underestimate, as it does not include all air pollutants.

Thomas Kienbauer, the owner of the Alexander patisserie in Vienna, created an unusual cake that depicts the New York twin towers in the colors of the Social Democrats (SPÖ) and the conservative People’s Party (ÖVP), two parties in the current governing coalition in Austria.

The planes flying into them represent the opposition: the Greens and the right-wing Freedom Party (FPÖ). Another plane atop one of the towers, representing the one that crashed into the Pentagon, embodies Austrian liberals.

Forest fires rage in Ukraine dangerously close to Chernobyl. Ukrainian interior minister Arsen Avakov said conditions “worsened.”

“The forest fire is heading in the direction of Chernobyl’s installations,” he said. Treetop flames and strong gusts of wind have created a real danger of the fire spreading to an area within 20 kilometers of the power plant.”

“There are about (1,000 acres) of forests in the endangered area,” he claimed. “National Guard and interior ministry forces have been put on combat alert.”
