US Paratroopers Conduct Largest Drills Since 9-11 With Scenario Reminiscent Of Fighting ISIS – 16 October 2014

Late last month, the US Army completed the largest simulated ground-combat exercise since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 in preparation for a confrontation with the likes Islamic State, which blends insurgent tactics with large ground-force maneuvers.

The 12-day exercise held at the Army’s 200,000-acre Joint Readiness Training Center in Fort Polk, Louisiana included an initial drop of about a thousand paratroopers from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 82nd Airborne Division along with numerous combat and reconnaissance materials needed for a swift-response scenario, The Huffington Post reported.

Flown into fictional enemy territory – “controlled” by 800 troops of an actual airborne battalion known during the exercise as Opposing Force – the paratroopers are charged with preparing for intense fighting drills in an environment pre-planned to be as hectic than an actual combat scene, if not more so.

‘Shocking Failure’: Rape, Sex Offenses Spike In England & Wales – 16 October 2014

The number of recorded rapes and sexual offences has dramatically risen in the past 12 months, despite overall crime levels in the UK falling to their lowest since the 1980s.

Data recorded by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) showed a 29 percent increase in the number of recorded rape cases last year, while the number of overall crimes filed as sex offences rose by 21 percent to 22,116.

Additionally, the ONS data showed the number of rape attacks carried out at knifepoint had risen by 48 percent, from 199 to 294. Sex offences committed at knifepoint similarly rose by 22 percent, from 91 to 111.

The Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy (EFDD) group had comprised of 48 members in total, including Farage’s UKIP and Beppe Grillo’s Italian Five Star Movement.

The defunct bloc has accused the Parliament’s president, Martin Schulz, of deliberately causing the withdrawal of Latvian MEP Iveta Grigule.

Ebola Epidemic Might Trigger Major Food Crisis – UN – 16 October 2014

The United Nations and non-governmental organizations believe an Ebola crisis that continues to strengthen in the coming months will cause food shortages that could devastate regions in West Africa hit hardest by the virus.

The UN World Food Program (WFP) said it is ramping up efforts to feed more people in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone, the trio of nations at the epicenter of the latest Ebola virus outbreak that has claimed over 4,000 lives. Border and market closures, restricted movements, and fear of the virus threaten food access in these areas, experts say.

Bettina Luescher, WFP’s chief North American spokesperson, told AP the agency needs to reach 1.3 million people in these nations. WFP has gotten food to 534,000 people thus far, and plans to reach another 600,000 to 700,000 this month.

The FTSE is down 0.7% thus far today. The eurozone markets tried a brief rally that went nowhere. Last night, Asian markets followed suit. What is being laughably described as “an unexpected clutch of news” and “global growth fears” around the World follows the usual pattern of ‘the Surprise of the Inevitable and The Growth we all knew went long Ago’ from Bears. AEP is calling for permanent QE (having another off his off/odd days). Yellen has been wheeled out to say she’s confident (always a bad sign) and the US futures are calling at least -1%.

Dirty Money: 19 UK Firms Alleged ‘Complicit’ In $20Bn Laundering Scam – 16 October 2014

Some 19 British firms are at the center of an investigation into in a mammoth global money-laundering operation. The scheme was allegedly contrived to make $20bn (£12.5bn) of ill-gotten gains appear legitimate.

The dirty money is thought to have originated from criminal gangs and corrupt officials across the globe, attempting to make their tainted money appear clean so it can be spent free of suspicion.

An investigation carried out by The Independent and UK NGO the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) uncovered dozens of companies in a complex global web that are implicated in the criminal scheme.

A minimum of 19 UK firms, potentially implicated in the scam, are currently under investigation. The revelations came to light on Thursday.
