Would you like to have a digital identity card that is automatically issued to you at birth?  In one European nation, residents use such a card when they go to the hospital, when they do their banking, when they go shopping and even when they vote.  This card has become so popular that this particular European country actually plans to start issuing them to millions of non-citizens all over the planet who request them.  Never heard about this?  Neither had I before this week.  The Economist is calling for the entire planet to adopt this “national identification system” that the little nation of Estonia has adopted.  The Economist is touting all of the “benefits” of a “national identification card”, but are there dangers as well?  Could adopting such a system potentially open the door for greater government tyranny than we have ever known before?

Tobacco Giant To Pay $23Bn Damages To Florida Smoker’s Widow – 20 July 2014

A jury in Florida has awarded the widow of a chain smoker who died of lung cancer at the age of 36 punitive damages of $23 billion. RJ Reynolds, the second biggest tobacco company in the US, plans to challenge “this runaway verdict.”

The judgment is the largest in Florida’s history in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by a single plaintiff, said a spokesman for the widow’s lawyer, Chris Chesnut.

Cynthia Robinson sued RJ Reynolds – which produces Winston, Camel and Pall Mall – back in 2008 over the death of her husband Michael Johnson, arguing the cigarette company concealed the dangers and addictive nature of smoking.

15,000 Turn Out For Pro-Gaza Rally In London – 20 July 2014

London streets were swarmed by a pro-Palestinian demonstration which gathered nearly 15,000 participants Saturday. Marching down to the Israeli Embassy from Downing Street, they chanted “Israel is a terror state,” slamming Tel Aviv’s offensive in Gaza.

David Cameron’s office is located about 5km (3 miles) from the embassy. While the march itself was peaceful, several key roads downtown were closed.

The death toll from the operation launched by Israel, including the ground offensive of two days ago, has now reached 400 people by Palestinian health ministry’s accounts, the overwhelming majority of them civilians.

Australian PM Hints Putin May Dropped From G20 Summit Over MH17 Crash – 20 July 2014

The prime minister of Australia, currently presiding over the G20, has hinted the Russian president could be dropped from the next summit in Brisbane over the MH17 crash in Ukraine. This came even before international investigators made it to the scene.

“We take a very, very dim view of this and the idea that Russia can wash its hands of responsibility because this happened in Ukrainian airspace just does not stand serious scrutiny. We all know what’s happening in the Ukraine,” Tony Abbott said at a press conference on Saturday.

It was “Russian-controlled territory, Russian-backed rebels, quite likely a Russian-supplied weapon. Russia can’t wash its hands of this,” Abbott reiterated on Sunday.
