Capitalist Forces Could Create ‘Uncontrollable’ Artificial Intelligence – Scientist – 24 February 2015

Artificial intelligence (AI) needs to develop human emotion if humanity is to avoid the potential existential threat posed by machines capable of consciousness, a leading scientist has warned.

Computers that are “human-like” will be capable of empathy and moral reasoning, therefore reducing the risk of AI turning against humanity, he said.

Murray Shanahan, professor of cognitive robotics at Imperial College London, cautioned against “capitalist forces” developing AI without any sense of morality, arguing it could lead to potentially “uncontrollable military technologies.”

Stark Choice’: Britain Will Import 50% Of Food By 2040, Farmers Union Warns – 24 February 2015

The UK will be importing more than half of its food supplies within a decade due to a growing population and stagnating farm productivity, farming leaders have warned.

The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) said the UK’s falling levels of self-sufficiency would leave the population exposed to changeable prices and shortages.

Speaking at their annual conference Tuesday, the union called on politicians to invest in a more sustainable farming future for Britain and create a higher level of independence.

Top International Banks Face US Probe For Alleged Precious Metals Market Fix – 24 February 2015

The US Department of Justice is in the early stages of an investigation into at least 10 international banks—including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and Barclays—over alleged manipulation of the precious metals market.

HSBC included in its annual report, published Monday, that the antitrust division of the Justice Department asked the bank to submit documents related to an investigation into the price setting of gold, silver, platinum and palladium.

The report added that the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) subpoenaed HSBC Bank USA for information on its precious metals trading. The bank said it was cooperating with American officials.

Cameron Commits Troops & ‘Non-Lethal Aid’ To Ukraine – 24 February 2015

Prime Minister David Cameron has said Britain will not supply Ukraine with lethal weaponry in the fight against rebels in the East of the country, but UK troops will support Ukrainians with tactical intelligence, training and logistics.

Speaking to the Liaison Select Committee, David Cameron said UK support would be given “well away from the area of conflict,” adding that the purpose of aid would be to improve Ukraine’s tactical advantage.

He was further questioned on the capability of the UK to defend its airspace after RAF jets were scrambled to intercept Russian bombers last week for the second time in 2015.

Japan’s Credit Card Firm To Start Using Russia’s National Payment System By End Of 2015 – 24 February 2015

The Japanese JCB payment system is ready to start working with Russia’s national payment system (NPCS) by the end of 2015, according to company CEO Takashi Suetsugu.

He confirmed JCB is aware that if it doesn’t transfer processing to NPCS before April 1, it will have to make a security deposit to the Central Bank of Russia.

“We tried to calculate [the fee – Ed.], but it’s hard to say right now,” TASS quotes Suetsugu as saying on Tuesday.

Earlier this month Visa and MasterCard localized Russian payments, meaning they will process domestic payments through the National Payment System.
