Tens Of Thousands Sleep Out: Massive Protest Lights Up Hong Kong Skyline – 30 September 2014

Hong Kong is witnessing one of the city’s largest rallies in decades, with tens of thousands of people taking to the streets to join a protest movement, widely known as #OccupyCentral, demanding election reform.

Although the movement’s hashtag mentions only one of Hong Kong’s districts, by Tuesday protesters had gathered in at least four of the city’s busiest areas – including Admiralty, the Central business district, the popular shopping district of Causeway Bay, and Mong Kok in Kowloon.

Unlike the relatively calm nightly gatherings on Hong Kong Island, protests were more distraught at times across the water in Mong Kok. Thousands blocked one of Kowloon’s busiest intersections – the corner of Nathan Road and Argyle Street – for several nights.

Ron Paul: Secessionism Is A ‘Grand American Tradition’ – 30 September 2014

On the heels of a failed attempt in Scotland to separate from the UK, longtime American lawmaker Ron Paul is opening up about his take on secessionism in the United States.

Recent polling suggests that roughly a quarter of Americans support the notion of being able to have their state separate from the rest of the US, and Paul — the 79-year-old former Republican congressman and three-time presidential hopeful — says citizens who celebrate that inkling are expressing something inherently American.

“Americans who embrace secession are acting in a grand American tradition,” the ex-lawmaker wrote in an editorial published on Sunday by the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity. “The Declaration of Independence was written to justify secession from Britain. Supporters of liberty should cheer the growth in support for secession, as it is the ultimate rejection of centralized government and the ideologies of Keynesianism, welfarism and militarism.”

Fracking License Demand Growing, Says UK Minister Amid Public Opposition – 30 September 2014

Shale gas licenses are attracting solid interest from investors, according to UK business and energy minister Matt Hancock. Communities are resisting government plans to allow fracking firms to drill under homes without their permission.

Hancock said that interest in Britain’s first round of shale gas licensing in six years would allow the UK to exploit fracking to secure its future energy supply.

“I feel like it’s the duty of any government to ensure that this potential is explored,” Hancock told Reuters on the sidelines of his Conservative Party’s annual conference in Birmingham. “Fracking has the potential to be very important for the security of our energy supplies.”
