Police Agencies That Use Military Weapons At Riots May Be Forced To Repay Federal Grants – 10 September 2014

The United States Department of Homeland Security may require the local police forces it supplies with military-grade weapons to repay federal anti-terrorism grants should the items be used to suppress dissent.

A representative of the DHS, one of three federal agencies responsible for allocating military equipment to local police forces, indicated during the first congressional hearing devoted to the last month’s civil unrest in Ferguson, Missouri that the department is considering demanding that grant money be repaid should weapons be used to tamp down protests.

“We have a range of remedies should [the Dept. of Justice] find non-compliance, including recoupment of funds,” Brian Kamoie of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, told Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) of the Senate Homeland Security Committee during a hearing on Tuesday this week in Washington, DC.

Poland Stops Reverse Gas Flow To Ukraine, Kiev Blames Russia – 10 September 2014

Ukraine’s state-controlled gas transit company says Poland cut off reverse flows to Ukraine, alleging that a quarter of Russian gas imports to Poland went missing. Gazprom said it continues to supply the same amount of gas as previously.

Uktransgaz CEO Igor Prokopiv accused Russia of reducing supplies to “disrupt reverse deliveries” from Poland.

“At 2pm Poland stopped reverse gas flows to Ukraine, which had been in the range of 4 million cubic meters,” Prokopiv told journalists in Kiev on Wednesday. “Today Poland put in an order for 11 million cubic meters a day, and Russia confirmed orders for 7 million cubic meters. Those 4 million cubic meters are our reverse flows.”

Covert US-EU Trade Deal Could Make NHS Privatization Irreversible – Trade Unions – 10 September 2014

A group of high-profile trade unions have backed a growing campaign opposed to a new transatlantic trade deal critics claim will make the privatization of Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) irreversible.

Three of the UK’s largest unions have tendered motions to the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Liverpool, outlining their opposition to the cross-border agreement currently being negotiated by EU bureaucrats and US delegates.

While the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is the largest bilateral trade deal ever brokered, it is currently being developed behind closed doors.
