Labour To Block TTIP NHS Sell-Off As Leader Miliband Plummets In Polls – 3 November 2014

Labour has backed an anti-privatization bill that excludes the NHS from the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). Trade unionists and academics warn the cross-border deal could lead to the irreversible privatization of the health service.

Labour’s backing of the legislation comes as Ed Miliband faces increased pressure over a record low personal rating in the polls.

The anti-privatization bill would exclude the National Health Service from TTIP, a bilateral EU-US trade deal which has garnered criticism from trade union leaders and academics in Britain and other EU states.

Critics caution TTIP could lead to the permanent privatization of NHS services by prioritizing profit-seeking firms over domestic lawmakers.

MPs’ Expenses Scandal: Oops! Evidence Destroyed, UK Investigations Hindered – 3 November 2014

MPs who abused the unreformed expenses system will avoid further investigation due to the disposal of official records by the House of Commons, it has been revealed.

Speaker John Bercow stands accused of continuing to cover up the MPs expenses scandal after he presided over the shredding of tens of thousands of documents relating to claims made before 2010.

The destruction of the documents was revealed in a letter to Tory activists, following complaints about their local MPs’ claims between 2004 and 2010.

The activists wrote to Kathryn Hudson, the standards commissioner, questioning the legitimacy of Conservative MP Andrew Turner’s accommodation claims, but were told by Turner “all records relating to expenses claims before 2010 have now been destroyed.”

‘Wrong Kind Of Recovery’: Wage Inequality, Austerity And Homelessness Prevail – 3 November 2014

Over 20 percent of UK workers earn less that the nation’s living wage, a KPMG report reveals. Meanwhile, as inequality rises and austerity prevails, over 90,000 children are homeless, new research suggests.

Published on Monday to coincide with ‘Living Wage Week’, KPMG’s research indicates younger workers, females and part-time staff are the most likely to earn a salary that falls beneath the living wage.

Considered to be the fundamental threshold of pay necessary for a basic but reasonable standard of living, the living wage for 2014 was £8.80 per hour in London and £7.65 in other regions of Britain.

Revised living wage rates were announced by London Mayor Boris Johnson on Monday, with the basic benchmark rising to £9.15 for Londoners and £7.85 for workers in other parts of the country.

Iron Sword 2014: NATO Stages Massive Military Drill In Lithuania – 3 November 2014

Servicemen from nine NATO member states are taking part in nearly two weeks of military exercise in Lithuania. What used to be a national military drill has become a multinational NATO war game in response to events in neighboring Ukraine.

2,500 servicemen from Canada, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Germany, Lithuania, Luxemburg, the UK and the US are taking part in the Iron Sword 2014 military drill in Lithuania, November 2-14.

The troops will be training “interoperability in NATO units, co-ordination of actions and readiness to complete defensive and offensive operations,” reported Lithuania’s DELFI news agency.

The exercises will be conducted mainly in two locations: Silvestras Zukauskas training range in Pabrade, and at the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion’s training area in Rukla

China Unveils Anti-Drone Laser Weapon Able To Shoot Down ‘Small Aircraft’ Within 5 Seconds – 3 November 2014

China has developed and successfully tested a highly accurate laser defense system against light drones. The homemade machine boasts a two-kilometer range and can down “various small aircraft” within five seconds of locating its target.

Boasting high speed, great precision and low noise, the system is aimed at destroying unmanned, small-scale drones flying under an altitude of 500 meters and at speeds below 50 meters per second, the official Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement by one of the developers, the China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP).

A recent test saw the machine successfully bring down over 30 drones – a 100-percent success rate, according to the statement. The laser system is expected to play a key role in ensuring security during major events in urban areas.

“Intercepting such drones is usually the work of snipers and helicopters, but their success rate is not as high and mistakes with accuracy can result in unwanted damage,” explained Yi Jinsong, a manager with China Jiuyuan Hi-Tech Equipment Corp.

Revealed: Ferguson No-Fly Zone Was Meant To Keep Media Away – 3 November 2014

The 37-mile no-fly zone around Ferguson, implemented after the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown by a police officer in August, was designed to keep the press out, phone recordings obtained by AP via the Freedom of Information Act reveal.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed a 12-day no-fly zone in compliance with requests from local police after protests erupted in response to the August 9th police shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teen. At the time, the official reason given for the restriction was safety precautions. However, in audio recordings, officials are heard admitting that the real reason for the flight restriction was to keep news helicopters from flying over the St. Louis suburb.

The St. Louis Police department maintained that the restricted fly zone was instituted in response to shots fired at a police helicopter, although they were not able to provide an incident report on the shooting, according to AP.

Google Builds ‘Brain’ Machine Using Memory Like Digital Computers – 3 November 2014

A Google-owned company has built a device that combines the learning properties of a neural network with the computational ability of a computer. The combined architecture brings artificial intelligence technology closer.

Google bought the London-based DeepMind Technologies start-up for $400 million earlier this year. Now the company has revealed a prototype computer that mimics the way a human brain stores and recalls information in short-term memory.

The device called a Neural Turing Machine (NTM) is a novel kind of neural network. Such networks are similar to organic brains consisting of interconnected neurons. Rather than processing 0s and 1s like a digital computer, such a network transmits input signal under certain rules.

Neutral networks are good at finding patterns in information flow. The way our brain can easily recognize faces while regular computers can’t is due to its neurons-based architecture. They can also be taught to complete tasks better than digital computers, which need programmer-generated code to execute a job.

Canada Carries Out Its First Airstrikes Against Islamic State – 3 November 2014

The Canadian Air Force has completed its first strike against Islamic State militants in Iraq. Poor weather had previously hampered combat missions as currently Canadian fighter jets aren’t armed with all-weather laser-guided bombs.

“Coordinated with our coalition partners, two CF-18s (Hornet fighter jets) attacked ISIL targets with GBU-12 laser-guided bombs in the vicinity of Fallujah, Iraq,” said a statement issued by Canadian Defense Minister Rob Nicholson.

“The approximately four-hour mission included air-to-air refueling from Canada’s Polaris aircraft. All aircraft returned safely to their base,” the statement said.
