Dutch parliamentarian Van Raak asked questions about the listening in on internet traffic by the Dutch Intelligence Service AIVD and Military Intelligence Service MIVD.  They deny listening into the AMS-IX (Amsterdam Information Exchange) which is a non-profit company.  This exchange is the most important Dutch internet exchange point and the second largest in the world. Most of the Dutch data is handled here and lots of foreign countries data is also going through this  exchange point.  The two intelligence services are working together now in a projects called  Argo II and Symbolon. They are building a conjoint  cyber unit that is called Sigint.

The number of internet taps carried out by Dutch police rose 500% to 16,600 last year, according to new justice ministry figures.

By contrast, the number of phone taps rose just 3% to nearly 25,500 despite doubts about their usefulness. And the number of requests for information about phone calls – such as the location calls were made from – reached almost 57,000, up 10% on 2011.

The Netherlands sanctions more phone taps than any other country in the world. The figures do not include taps by the security services.

Okuma, a Japanese machine-tool maker, has seen its stock price rise around 30% this year. Its customers have outdated machinery that needs replacing. But, for now, the company isn’t investing. Instead, it is sitting on a pile of cash worth about $280 million—50% higher than its pile a decade ago, equivalent to one-fifth its annual sales, and more than twice the level required for the firm to be deemed loan-worthy by a bank.
