Berlusconi Gets Jail Sentence In Wiretap Trial – 7 March 2013

(Reuters) – An Italian court sentenced ex-Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Thursday to one year in jail over the publication by his family’s newspaper of a transcript of a leaked wiretap connected to a banking scandal in 2006.

Italian justice system rules mean the 76-year-old media billionaire would not have to serve any jail time until the appeals process has been exhausted, and a higher court may still overturn the ruling.

It came in the middle of a political impasse arising from last week’s election which left no party able to form a government on its own, although Berlusconi’s center-right formation emerged as the second strongest in parliament.

Far too great a percentage of the masses fall into line and follow the leader. Human beings are a herding species by nature, but herding can get taken to a far greater level than we should allow. We have been following along for so too long now and it has gotten us into very serious trouble. We don’t ask questions of anything or anybody any more. We just follow the leader because it is easy to do and we don’t have to entertain difficult thoughts if we don’t ask questions. Look where this has gotten us! Ask as many questions as you can. It is not only our right to know the truth, it is imperative we do, it decides our ability to survive or not! If we do not know the truth we are an easy victim to be hoodwinked.

If you ever felt like 1929 is about to happen again, only this time without the laughs, last night’s news from Monte Paschi Bank might represent the final conviction that we have time-warped back to the past: David Rossi, the head of communications at the bank, committed suicide by jumping off the building yesterday afternoon. While I understand that these days, the words ‘banker’ and ‘suicide’ are strangers to each other (suicide requires remorse) Rossi wasn’t a banker, he was an adman. It’s the business I emerged from, and yes, people in it do shows signs of having a conscience here and there. Personally I can’t see conscience catching on, but that’s not important to David Rossi any more because he’s dead.
