California Shaken By Aftershocks While Earthquake Recovery Ongoing – 25 August 2014

At least two people are still in critical or serious condition following an earthquake that struck California’s Napa Valley. Power has been restored to much of the world-famous wine country, though work on damaged gas and water lines is ongoing.

More than a 100 others are still nursing lower-level injuries from the magnitude 6.0 temblor that struck six miles south of the city of Napa on Sunday. The timing of the earthquake, at around 3:20 a.m. local time, meant many had to stumble through broken glass and flying furniture in the darkness to escape danger or to reach loved ones.

Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa reported treating 172 people in the emergency room, though hospital officials could not say for certain how many of those suffered quake-related afflictions.

New Hotbed Of Ebola Found In Congo As Serum-Treated Doctor Dies – 25 August 2014

Officials from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) say that a second, separate outbreak of the deadly virus has occurred in the country. Meanwhile, a Liberian doctor treated with an experimental serum against the illness has passed away.

DRC Health Minister Felix Numbi said that two of eight people who died from a “hemorrhagic fever” last week have been diagnosed with a strain of the disease in postmortem lab tests. The death toll of the sudden epidemic in the country’s Equateur province has reached 13 in total.

“This epidemic has nothing to do with the one in West Africa,” said Numbi. “The experience acquired during the six previous epidemics of Ebola will contribute to the containing of this illness.”

Maine Drinking Water Tests Positive For Dangerous Levels Of Fluoride – 25 August 2014

A new study out of Maine suggests that residents across the New England state are regularly subjected to drinking water containing double the amount of fluoride considered to be dangerous by federal guidelines.

Residents from across the Pine Tree State were asked to voluntarily take samples from the private wells they rely on for drinking water, and ten different towns—including eight within a single county—tested higher than hoped for.

Scientific American published the results of the study last week, and the article’s author, Dina Fine Maron, wrote that the details suggest many Mainers are introducing dangerous amounts of fluoride to their bodies due to an absence of regulation.

ZeroHedge – Iran State TV Airs Footage Of “Downed Israeli Drone” – 25 August 2014

 As Iran continues to negotiate with world powers over its controversial (but purely for peaceful purposes, of course) nuclear program – with hard-liners demanding more concessions from the West – The Telegraph reports that a brief video, which aired on the Arabic-language Al-Alam TV, shows what the channel says are parts of an Israeli drone, scattered in an unidentified desert area. Text accompanying the footage says the drone was downed on Saturday and identifies it as a Hermes 450, a known Israeli model. The Iranian TV station also says the model is dubbed “Spy Goddess.” However, as The Telegraph adds, there were no visible Israeli markings in the footage and Israel’s military has declined comment on the matter… and Iran will sue Israel legally over its alleged violation of Iran’s air space.
