The U.S. Agency for International Development is a government body in charge of taking taxpayer dollars and doling it out to foreign projects that will theoretically bring humanitarian aid to struggling regions.  No matter what one might think about the nobility of such a mission, the agency has been much maligned for its decades-long mismanagement and outright theft of those funds (see here, here, and here among many sources), as well as being in a direct or indirect position to enable the use of food as a weapon.

IRS Awarded Contract To Surveillance Company That Tracks License Plates – 18 April 2014

A California-based surveillance vendor that sells access to license plate databases and the devices that indiscriminately collect that information has been reportedly cashing checks from the Internal Revenue Service and other federal offices.

According to procurement records seen by journalists at Bloomberg News, the IRS is among a group of United States government agencies that has awarded contracts to Vigilant Solutions, a seller of controversial license plate tracking technology that has attracted the ire of the American Civil Liberties Union and other privacy proponents in recent years.

On Thursday this week, Kathleen Miller wrote for Bloomberg that the IRS, the US Forest Service and the Air Force’s Air Combat Command have since 2009 conducted off the radar deals with Vigilant that allowed the company to receive roughly $415,000 from Uncle Sam.

Navy Charges Fourth Official In Worst Corruption Scandal In Decades – 18 April 2014

Officials have arrested and charged a fourth US Navy officer with leaking classified information to a defense contractor in exchange for cash, gifts, and other personal favors.

Petty Officer First Class Dan Layug was arrested Wednesday morning in San Diego and made his first appearance in court on Thursday, where he was charged with conspiracy to commit bribery in what’s been billed as the worst scandal to hit the Navy in decades.

According to NBC San Diego, court documents show that the 27-year-old Navy officer is accused of accepting money, luxury hotel accommodations, and consumer electronics from Glenn Defense Marine Asia, a contractor based in Singapore that had provided maintenance services for Navy ships for 25 years.

Powerful 7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Mexico, Buildings Shaken In Capital – 18 April 2014

A magnitude 7.5 earthquake hit Mexico on Friday in the western state of Guerrero, north of the resort of Acapulco. The quake shook the capital Mexico City for at least 30 seconds, with building swaying as people fled on to the streets.

The city was reportedly more crowded than usual because of the Easter holiday. Despite the relative severity of the quake there are no immediate reports of any major damage.

Some people were seen fleeing high rise buildings in dressing gowns and pajamas talking to relatives and friends on their cell phones, according to AP.
