Feds Start Rounding Up Wild Horses In Utah – 14 April 2014

Another standoff between federal officials and rural rangers has the potential to escalate in Utah just one state away from where a similar dispute recently propelled a disagreement there to the national spotlight.

The United States Bureau of Land Management says that there should be no more than 300 wild horses grazing in a chunk of southern Utah’s Iron County, Reuters reported over the weekend, but federal officials estimate that the number is actually closer to 2,000. Now as the feds attempt to figure out how to get their hands on the animals in order to literally thin the heard, wild horse preservation groups are stepping up and speaking out.

Officials with the both the BLM and Iron County are attempting to wrangle up the wild horses that roam freely in federally-designated herd management zones, but advocates say such an operation is against the law.

Italy Opens Bidding For Venice Island – 14 April 2014

Italy has put an island in the Venice lagoon up for auction in order to attract international funds to help ease crippling public debt. An army barracks in Trieste and a residence in Loreto – a Catholic pilgrimage site – are among those up for bidding.

“Investors can bid for our properties from everywhere, from New York or Dubai,” Stefano Scalera from public state property management agency Demanio told Reuters on Monday.

Among other sites being sold – aside from the Venetian lagoon island of Poveglia, are a 15th century bastion against the Ottoman Turks known as in Gradisca d’Isonzo, near the border with Slovenia, and an old monastery. While there are five properties considered ‘prestigious’ up for auction, forty other assets are also to be bid on.

European Union foreign ministers have agreed to expand sanctions against Russia, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said, Reuters reports.

Israel Lashes Out At Kerry Again, This Time For ‘Surrendering’ To Iran – 14 April 2014

A top Israeli official has criticized John Kerry for “surrendering” to Iran after the US Secretary of State said that the US would consider allowing Iran to have enough nuclear materials to build a weapon in six months.

“The things Kerry said are worrying, they are surprising and they are unacceptable,” said Yuval Steinitz, Israel’s security and strategic affairs minister, during a local radio interview.

“We are not opposed to a diplomatic solution but we are against a solution which is entirely a surrender to Iran and which leaves it a threshold nuclear state.

Russian Banks Vote For National Payment System From The Scratch – 14 April 2014

Banks polled by the Central Bank of Russia (CBR) say they want a completely new domestic payment system created from scratch instead of using one of the three systems already in the works.

Last week the Central Bank polled a number of Russian banks on the national payment system (NPS), says the Vedomosti daily.

The result showed that most of Russian lenders voted against developing one of the already existing platforms:The PRO 100 payment system used for Universal Electronic Cards, Golden Crown and Union Card.
