Thousands of Christians have gathered in Jerusalem to light torches and candles from a holy flame that ‘miraculously’ emerged from the tomb of Jesus in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on the eve of Orthodox Easter.

The Holy Fire ignites, apparently of its own accord, from the tomb of Jesus Christ at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. It has been descending on the church for more than 1,500 years and it is believed that the year in which it doesn’t light will be the last year in the history of man.

The fire descends on Jerusalem during a prayer by the Patriarch of Jerusalem and All Palestine, who then passes the flame to pilgrims. The pilgrims light 33 candles –that have all been tied together – from the fire to symbolize every year of Christ’s life.

People in eastern Ukraine fear the worst is yet to come after Kiev authorities launched a military operation in eastern regions of the country. Residents in the town of Izyum in the Kharkov region share their worries with RT.

“The first military contingent began arriving at the start of this week,” Elena, a local resident from Izyum, told RT. The town’s people witnessed armored personnel carriers, helicopters and jets constantly flying above their heads.

“These are all said to be Ukrainian military and the National Guard with Right Sector members,” she added.

A little over a year ago, in February 2013, a meteor traveling at 19 miles per second above Chelyabinsk in the Russian Urals exploded in the morning sky, recorded by countless dashcams, with the resulting shock wave shattering windows hundreds of miles away. Fast forward to this night, when residents of Russia’s northern Murmansk region witnessed the fall of a celestial body similar to the famous Chelyabinsk meteorite on Saturday night. It flashed at 02:10 am local time and was clearly seen in the sky. However, no sound of explosions was heard.

Fresh on the heels of a large earthquake in Mexico City, Mexico on Friday, April 18, 2014, Reuters is reporting that a 7.5 quake has struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea on Saturday.

Although there were no initial reports of damage or death, it is quite clear that the strength of the quake was significant simply by virtue of its magnitude.

A tsunami warning was issued for the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea but that warning was lifted shortly thereafter. It appears that there is no longer any tsunami-related threat.
